West of Eden
Just last week, Roberts shared a photo of West of Eden by Jean Stein. The New York Times bestseller, which made its debut in early February, is an oral history of Hollywood told through the narratives of five real, dysfunctional characters and their families. Stein opens and sets the tone of her book with a quote by novelist and screenwriter Raymond Chandler: "I smelled Los Angeles before I got to it. It smelled stale and old like a living room that had been closed too long." West of Eden, $20; barnesandnoble.com.
My Life on the Road
Prior to West of Eden, Roberts picked up the highly anticipated memoir by writer and activist Gloria Steinem. In explaining the title, Steinem writes, "When people ask me why I still have hope and energy after all these years, I always say: Because I travel. Taking to the road—by which I mean letting the road take you—changed who I thought I was." My Life on the Road, $17; amazon.com.
Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear
Earlier this year, Roberts devoured the "life-changing" book Big Magic. Written by Elizabeth Gilbert (the author of the hugely popular memoir Eat Pray Love), Big Magic explores the concepts of inspiration, curiosity, and creativity: "One of the oldest and most generous tricks that the universe plays on human beings is to bury strange jewels within us all, and then stand back to see if we can ever find them," Gilbert writes. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, $17; amazon.com.
