Many of us spent our formative years idolizing spunky children's book heroines like Madeline and Eloise, dressing up in blue peacoats and suspenders, imagining that we we're strolling around Paris in two straight lines or roaming around the tippy-top floor of N.Y.C.'s Plaza Hotel. Now, thanks to Stacey Bendet of Alice + Olivia, kids of 2015 can wear their favorite character’s exact outfit—literally. The designer, known for her colorful, whimsical collections, has teamed up with Kelly Florio Kasouf, author of The Super Adventures of Sophie and the City: One Suite Holiday ($30; amazon.com), the third installment in the beloved series about a young girl's adventures in Manhattan, to create a dress and coat just like Sophie wears in the story.
A reimagining of The Nutcracker set in modern day, One Suite Holiday follows Sophie as she wanders her way to Lincoln Center to watch the storied play with her family, and subsequently gets lost in her imagination, where Upper East Side boys take on the role of wooden soldiers and Lower East Side graffiti artists as mice. Throughout, she dons Bendet's playful pouf dress with a white embroidered tulle skirt and chenille black-and-white striped coat. "The whole story is so fanciful—I wanted to create something that felt very 'cool girl in the city,'" Bendet told InStyle of her inspiration. "I'd pair them with combat boots or leopard print sneakers to toughen it up.” Consider your holiday gifts purchased.
